How Far Along Zombieland 2 Is, According To The Writers

Zombieland

Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese found a lot of success through Deadpool, a movie they'd been working on for years before Fox finally gave up and let it happen. Now the duo is hard at work on ironing out Deadpool 2, but there's actually another sequel that they've been sitting on for almost as long Deadpool: Zombieland 2. The horror comedy sequel has been in the works since the original hit theaters, but progress has always been one step forward and two steps back. Wernick and Reese have opened up about the project and it seems like things are finally about to take off.

That is breaking news that we're on Zombieland 2 right now. We're sitting with Woody [Harrelson] tomorrow and are going to sort of walk him through some of the stuff we want to do. All the cast is pretty excited.

Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese appeared on Geeking Out (via ScreenCrush), AMC's geek-centric talk show hosted by Kevin Smith and Greg Gunberg, last week and finally confirmed that Zombieland 2 was in development. The two said they were getting ready to pitch some ideas to Woody Harrelson, who played the Twinkie hunting, zombie killing badass Tallahassee in the first one. Meeting with Harrelson seems as good as any way to get the ball rolling on this. It also sounds like the rest of the cast (Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin) will be involved too, though there isn't any official announcement on that.

Zombieland 2 is one of those "I'll believe it when I see" movies. Sony Pictures has been trying to get this sequel going practically since Zombieland was released in theaters back in 2009. Little spurts of news surface every few years reminding people that the project isn't dead before someone immediately backtracks and says they don't think it's happening or relevant anymore. A Zombieland TV series was even in the works at some point over on Amazon, but that fell quietly into the night shortly after it premiered. The project finally seemed to pick up some serious steam when a surprise announcement was made at Cinema Con with a nifty new logo. This is really our first bit of news since that announcement.

There probably isn't a completed draft for the film but it will most likely see the return of Columbus (Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Harrelson), Wichita (Stone), and Little Rock (Breslin) as they try to survive in a world overrun by zombies. The first film was a big hit with fans and, with the same creative team attached, the sequel could have similar results. That being said, the lack of Bill Murray cameos will definitely sting.

Zombieland 2 is definitely happening probably at some point in the future, so keep it here at CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated with new information as it becomes available.
