Felicity Jones Will Play A Supreme Court Justice, Probably Wants An Oscar

In 2015, Felicity Jones was nominated, and tipped as a moderately likely winner, for the Best Actress trophy at the Academy Awards. Unfortunately for her, that was the same year that Julianne Moore was nominated for her performance in Still Alice, and knowing our movie awards history, that was obviously the year where Moore triumphed. So naturally, Jones is more than likely looking for her next nomination and possible win. And she just may have found it, as she's signed on to play Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Jones has just joined On the Basis of Sex, a script that landed on the 2014 Black List, which involves the life and times of Ginsburg's fight for women's rights, which eventually landed her on the Supreme Court in 1993. Being named the second female justice, and the first Jewish justice on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life story is the sort of biopic awards judges look forward to.

In addition to the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic, Chadwick Boseman is going to star in the role of a young Thurgood Marshall in the film simply titled Marshall. Should Marshall and On the Basis of Sex succeed, we just might see a sort of Supreme Court Cinematic Universe taking shape. It's pretty much assured that if Thurgood Marshall and Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life stories make box office and awards gold, there's a chance that other justices, such as Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia, will have their stories adapted for the screen in a bid for political balance. All the while, the awards judges will have their work cut out for them in all of the major acting categories.

While Deadline has reported On the Basis of Sex as being developed with Felicity Jones in the lead, the film doesn't have any concrete plans for production or release dates. Jones is still keeping busy though, as she's also signed onto a film adaptation of the famed ballet Swan Lake. Though whenever her role as Ruth Bader Ginsburg does hit theaters, it will more than likely be in the later months of the film's release year, just so the folks behind the film's production make sure they're night and exposed for the awards committees to make their potential nominations.

For now, if you want to see Felicity Jones in action, you can watch her in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which just hit Netflix's streaming service today. Meanwhile, Marshall will hit theaters on October 13th, just in time to take advantage of the early awards season window.
