Very few directors in Hollywood do creepy as well as Darren Aronofsky. The acclaimed director responsible for Black Swan, Requiem For A Dream and more has a way with music and angles that convey creeping madness. It's as if dread and misery are always around the next corner. So, it should come as no surprise that his newest movie, mother!, just dropped what might be the creepiest trailer we'll see all year. Check out the ominous and uncomfortable two minutes and change below...
Mother! has been a bit of an enigma for awhile. The film has attracted a fair amount of buzz given Aronofsky's involvement, as well as having four leads (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) who have all been nominated for multiple Academy Awards, but there really hasn't been a ton of news about the movie at all. In fact, it comes out on September 15th, as in like a month from now, and this is the first substantial piece of marketing we've gotten. That's quite a departure from the standard model of hitting the world with a trailer almost a year out from release, but maybe it's actually better to start the hype train five weeks out.
This is normally the part of the story where I'd describe the plot for you, but I'm honestly not sure I know exactly what's going on. It seems like Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are hanging out in a creepy house with a blood stain when Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer show up, separately. And then things get weird. Like possible mental breakdown, possible serial killer shit real. That's it. That's all I know. People are going to end up dead or in a mental hospital or both, and if this soundtrack is as creepy as it seems, I might pee myself during my screening.
And yet, because of who is involved, we'll likely be there on opening night to see what to make of mother! Darren Aronofsky hasn't made a movie since 2014's Noah, the Biblical epic that was wildly underrated (you probably caught it on cable after skipping it in theaters and realized it wasn't nearly as bad as critics made it out to be). And the mother! cast consists of people you'd normally say "I'd watch them read the phone book on screen." Chances are that the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris will do a hell of a lot more than that in this thriller.
As mentioned, mother! will be in theaters before you know it. The September release date has me wondering if this is an Oscar player (something I would have assumed). Now it just looks like a straight up genre movie. And yet, it will be on the film festival circuit. We plan on catching it in Toronto next month, so we'll report back then.
