The Hilarious Way Elton John Landed A Role In Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Elton John on Nashville

Everyone loves a good celebrity cameo. With the exception of Ed Sheeran's role in this past season of Game of Thrones, fans often adore seeing their favorite singer or celeb show up, especially when it's unexpected. And that's exactly what's going to happen when Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Golden Circle arrives in theaters this week. News broke months ago that the legendary Sir Elton John would have a role in the highly anticipated sequel, and now Vaughn has opened up about how he managed to book him for the part. I recently had the chance to speak with the director about his new movie, where he revealed how Elton John became involved, saying:

I asked him to be in Kingsman 1 and he said no. And then he saw Kingman 1 and said, 'My God, I'm a bloody ingrate.' I said I'd love you to be in Kingsman 2, and he just said 'Tell me where and when, and I'm there'. And he turned up, and he was the most professional, lovely human being. The best trait in the world for a man or woman is patience. You have a serious man who doesn't take himself seriously. What a combination.

It looks like Sir Elton John needed to be convinced to make a cameo in the hilarious and action-packed spy franchise. But after he saw what Matthew Vaughn did with Kingsman: The Secret Service, then he was ready to jump into the colorful world that he previously missed out on.

Indeed, the success of Kingsman: The Secret Service came rather unexpectedly, despite its impressive starring cast that included Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson. The film hit theaters in 2014 and made an absolutely massive profit at the box office, earning a whopping $414.4 million total. It quickly became clear that Matthew Vaughn had something special on his hands, as the budding franchise paid tribute and sometimes poked fun at spy movies like the Bond films. Plus it contained a villain that was equally hilarious as he was menacing.

And now it looks like Matthew Vaughn and company is hoping that lighting will strike twice. Kingsman: The Golden Circle will help to expand the franchise, while also keeping to its roots with another quirky villain who is hellbent on destruction. Said villain will come in the form of Julianne Moore's Poppy, who sets out to destroy Kingsman in order to help her drug cartel have dominance over the world. When their chips are down, Eggsy will have to team up with his American counterparts, the Statesman, in order to bring Poppy down and save the world's population.

The studio is currently keeping Elton John's role tightly under wraps, but he'll be playing a fictionalized version of himself in the sequel. He's done this before on the small screen with cameos in Nashville and Will and Grace.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle will arrive in theaters on September 22nd. In the meantime, check out our 2017 release list to plan your last trips to the movies before the New Year.
