We've had to wait an especially long time to get the movie based on the third book in the Maze Runner series, but now we've finally got our first look at the big finale. The first trailer for Maze Runner: The Death Cure is here and it sets up the final adventure for Dylan O'Brien and his group of young heroes. The trailer has lots of great action and while the plot will go heavy into science fiction, the focus of the trailer is more old school western, complete with an explosive train robbery. The trailer for Maze Runner: The Death Cure opens with a few seconds of setup just to get everybody up to speed and remind those who may have forgotten what happened in the first two movies. Then we cut to the new footage, and see that the goal of our team of heroes here is to break into a city that's run by the same people that kept all the kids locked in the original maze in the first place.
For some reason, which readers of the books are probably aware, this also requires them to rob a train. This takes up the bulk of the trailer, and somewhat surprisingly, if I'm being honest, makes the movie look pretty good. It's got a sort of Mad Max meets Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid vibe to it. This appears to be a rescue mission as the train is full of prisoners, and the trailer makes reference to Thomas' attempts to save everybody.
Fans of the Maze Runner film series have been waiting quite some time for a look at the new movie. The film was originally supposed to be released in February of this year, but then star Dylan O'Brien was involved in a serious accident while filming a stunt for the movie. The actor ended up hospitalized and production on the movie was entirely shut down. Production wasn't able to restart until around the time the movie was originally supposed to release, this past February.
Now, fans are looking forward to the release of Maze Runner: The Death Cure in January.
Overall the Maze Runner franchise has faired a bit better than some of the other films based on post-apocalyptic YA books. While the domestic box office hasn't necessarily set the industry on fire, the film's have done solidly overseas and their budgets have been comparatively small, making the movies almost certainly solid profit centers. Odds are that The Death Cure's budget will be the biggest of them all, as the delay was almost certainly expensive, but there's every reason to believe the film will be successful, as long as movie fans haven't completely forgotten about the franchise due to the gap in time.
