The '80s was ruled by two genres that thrived throughout the decade: the teen sex comedy and the slasher horror flick. While both have evolved over time, they have recently come together to deliver a Netflix horror/comedy that looks too fun to miss. Which is why we urge you to watch the trailer for The Babysitter below, keeping in mind that it's totally not safe for work and look like it delves deep into the big moments of the film's narrative.
Marking the directorial return of McG for his first film since 2014's 3 Days To Kill, The Babysitter sees a young man nursing a crush on his babysitter, curious about what sort of mischief she gets up to when he goes to bed. Well, as misfortune would have it, she and her hot friends are the type that think human sacrifices are cool social media bait, and they're about to use him as the big finale. So yeah, this is definitely not your run of the mill "get into trouble, and fall for each other" teen comedy, nor is it a usual "burly guy chases after coeds and takes their lives" slasher. Rather, it looks to be a bloody funny mash-up of both genres.
Part of the cadre of hot young folks trying to make Satan their next Instagram follower are some familiar faces, like Bella Thorne and Robbie Amell, who not only co-starred in The DUFF together, but also had individual hits across TV and films. Thorne is of particular interest in this cast for two reasons: one is the fact that should The Babysitter be as fun as it looks, it could help everyone forget the fact that her long languishing role in Amityville: The Awakening is being dumped rather unceremoniously. But the second interesting factor is that it's part of a longer partnership between Bella Thorne and Netflix, as she's already starred in one other Netflix original this year, the thriller You Get Me. That being said, we have to wonder if showing her being shot isn't one of many glimpses into the film's contents that feels a bit spoilery.
Watching the trailer for The Babysitter puts a fine point on the fact that 2017 has been loving the horror genre so far, and that Netflix is clearly glad to be part of the fun themselves. Seeing as the Halloween season is upon us, there's always a question of what people should be watching in order to keep in the spirit. With a lot of fun action, serious bloodshed and misadventures to be had by all, this could be the sleeper hit of Halloween parties and horror gatherings once it's released.
The Babysitter drops in for some mayhem, and a couple pints, on October 13, exclusively on Netflix.
