What's Happening With Justice League 2, According To J.K. Simmons

Justice League

After all these years, a Justice League movie is less than a month from debuting in theaters. The first live-action team-up between DC Comics' flagship super team is set to be the biggest film yet in the DCEU, so of course, Warner Bros. already has sequels on the brain. While their cinematic universe plans seem to be fluctuating a bit, it sounds like we can expect more Justice League movies down the road. J.K. Simmons, who plays Commissioner Gordon in the first movie, teased that a script for Justice League 2 is already in development. He said:

But this is the first Justice League movie --- we hope --- of a few. They're working on scripts for The Batman and for the next Justice League movie. It introduces my incarnation of Commissioner Gordon. I don't have a lot to do. I feel like I just dipped my toe in the water of who Commissioner Gordon will be.

Justice League is only the beginning of J.K. Simmons' involvement in the DCEU. The actor will bring his interpretation of Commissioner Gordon to life in Justice League before heading over to The Batman, which is currently going through a top to bottom rewrite following the hiring of Matt Reeves as director. In an interview with Total Film (via Batman News), Simmons spoke briefly on his future appearances and revealed that there's already a Justice League 2 in the early stages of development. That's not a total shocker. Justice League is currently tracking for a good opening weekend, and if these team-up movies are meant to be Warner Bros. Avengers-esque franchise, you better believe there are going to be sequels!

Originally, Warner Bros. had slated a Justice League sequel for June 2019, but pumped the brakes a little. The original plan was for Zack Snyder to direct the sequel, so they delayed it in order to give him time to work on a different project (The Last Photograph). However, things have changed behind the scenes since then and it's not totally clear if Snyder will be staying on with DC Films following Justice League. Snyder stepped down as director several months ago in order to focus on family matters, with Joss Whedon coming in to handle reshoots and rewrites. We could be looking at a very different Justice League 2 whenever it makes it to theaters.

Maybe it's too early to focus on a sequel, but you don't have to wait much longer for the first one! Justice League is set to hit theaters on November 17.
