Michelle Pfeiffer Was In Talks For A Catwoman Spinoff

Michelle Pfieffer Catwoman batman Returns

Batman Returns is a weird movie, and many fans love it for that quality. It's chock full of bizarre performances, including Michelle Pfeiffer's magnetic turn as Catwoman. Pfeiffer's Selina Kyle has become utterly iconic in the years since Batman Returns hit theaters, but now it sounds like we almost got to see even more of her in an unmade Catwoman solo movie. Pfeiffer addressed the old project while promoting Murder on the Orient Express and said:

I loved that part. I felt like I was just getting comfortable and getting used to the claws and the mask, just figuring out how to move in all of that. There was a little bit of talk about that, then that kind of faded away.

If Michelle Pfeiffer's comments to The New York Times don't make you want to get in a time machine and get this Catwoman solo movie made, then I don't know what will. We don't have many details to work with regarding who would've stepped behind the camera, or if Batman would've appeared in the film, but the very idea Pfeiffer returning and growing even more comfortable in her role as Selina Kyle is too good to pass up.

It's also hard not to look back on the possibility of a Michelle Pfeiffer-fronted Catwoman solo movie and wonder what could've been. That feeling becomes even more prominent when we consider the Catwoman movie that we did eventually get. Remember? It was the one with Halle Berry in the lead role...

Halle Berry Catwoman

Of course, Michelle Pfeiffer's unmade Catwoman movie is only one of many DC films that have either languished in development hell or been outright canceled over the years. From Darren Aronofsky's take on Batman: Year One to Tim Burton's Nicholas Cage-fronted Superman Lives, some unmade DC films have arguably become almost as iconic as the ones that made it to the silver screen. However, amid all of these projects, Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman movie arguably feels like one of the most frustrating because it could've been so cool.

Looking ahead to the future, it remains entirely possible that we may soon get the Catwoman solo movie that we've been waiting for -- even if Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't sign on for the lead role. Though we haven't heard much about the project recently, rumors seem to suggest that Gotham City Sirens is still in development, which would effectively serve as the platform to launch a brand new Catwoman for the DCEU. If the character sees success as part of an ensemble, then it only makes sense to assume that DC may one day decide to let Selina Kyle step out of the shadows again.

Though Michelle Pfeiffer never got a chance to take center stage in a Catwoman movie of her very own, she remains a fixture in the DC community for her near-perfect take on the villain/anti-hero in Batman Returns. The current Batman mythos will continue to expand when Justice League hits theaters later this month on November 17. Make sure to get your tickets for the long-awaited superhero epic!

As for Michelle Pfeiffer, you can catch her in Murder on the Orient Express next weekend on November 10.
