This weekend was exctiting for comic book fans, as Zack Snyder's Justice League finally arrived in theaters. The highly anticipated blockbuster expanded the DC Extended Universe in a big way, introducing a trio of new heroes to join the DC Trinity introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film prior to its release was the fate of Henry Cavill's Superman, who died fighting Doomsday in BvS. Now that the man of steel is back from the dead, Cavill knows what he wants to see from his character next: hope. He recently said,

There's a wonderful opportunity to tell the Superman story. Now there is a fantastic chance to show Superman in his full colors and tell a very complex, character-driven movie that is based on story and have that wonderful sensation of hope and happiness. A feel-good movie with lessons laced in there as well.

Do you hear that? It's the sound of countless DC fans cheering for joy. It looks like Henry Cavill wants to bring his next appearance as Superman back to basics, allowing the hero to once again be a symbol of hope and joy. That's a major departure from what we've seen previously in the DCEU.

Henry Cavill's comments to LA Times seem to echo the concerns that fans have had about his version of Superman. Because while DC's signature hero is typically stands for truth, justice, and the American way, Zack Snyder had other ideas for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. Snyder is known for his signature visual style, but he also usually directs films that are rather morose and void of levity. While this is fine for films like 300 and Watchmen, keeping Superman in such a dark place has always felt off.

But now that Superman is back from the dead and Zack Snyder's role in the DCEU is likely shrinking, the shared universe's Superman can begin resembling the comics a bit closer. Justice League certainly felt like a step in the right direction, with more color and levity than Snyder's previous two installments. And if a new director can be brought in, with Superman given a sense of hope similar to Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, fans should be very happy.

And there is one contender that seems like the most likely person to direct Man of Steel 2 (if it ever happens). Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn has been in early talks to helm the film, and his sense of joy and over the top action/comedy may be the perfect fit to bring Superman back to his former glory.

You can catch Henry Cavill in Justice League in theaters now. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.
