Mark Hamill Talks Working With Rian Johnson And Whether He'd Ever Play Another Star Wars Character

Luke Skywalker The Last Jedi Mark Hamill

Mark Hamill has arguably become inextricable from his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, but we've been wondering if he would ever consider playing a different role in the sci-fi series altogether. As it turns out, the star of The Last Jedi recently sat down with CinemaBlend to discuss the possibility of playing another character in the Star Wars canon even if he ever retires from Luke, and he admitted that he would consider it -- especially if Rian Johnson were involved in the project. Hamill told us:

I would always be open to anything. Mostly working with Rian again. Even outside the Star Wars franchise. He's one of the most personable, collaborative directors. I've never heard him raise his voice. I've never heard him curse. He's never humiliated anyone. He's just almost too good to be true. Yeah, he's the sweetest guy in the world.

So not only will Mark Hamill not rule out returning to the Star Wars franchise even after hanging up his Jedi robes, but he also seems more than willing to collaborate on anything that will reteam him with director Rian Johnson. The Last Jedi is notable for how little behind-the-scenes drama occurred on the set (which is even more interesting when we consider the drama on films like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Episode IX) and it really looks like people associated with Episode VIII have nothing but good things to say about the man behind the camera.

To learn that Mark Hamill wants to work with Rian Johnson again definitely seems to line up with previous reports about the director. He has shown a willingness to work with the same actors on multiple occasions -- such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper and Brick -- and the fact that Lucasfilm has given him an entirely new Star Wars trilogy after his work on The Last Jedi shows that there's desire to reinvest in him as a creative entity.

A question like this seems specifically important for an actor like Mark Hamill when we take his legendary chops as a vocal performer into consideration. Even in the realm of classic DC animation, Mark Hamill has provided his voice to several different characters including Tony Zucco, The Trickster, and (most notably) The Joker. Hamill doesn't have a new Star Wars character lined up for his post-Luke career (Luke's future behind The Last Jedi remains very unclear), but it's obvious that the actor would be more than willing to work with this filmmaker again if the opportunity presents itself. Here's Mark Hamill on the possibility of playing someone other than Luke in a Star Wars movie:

Only Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill know what the future holds for their potential creative partnership. Until a new project materializes, we can look forward to their first collaboration when The Last Jedi premieres in theaters on December 15. Order your tickets for the film now and start gearing up for the next adventure in the galaxy far, far away!
