What Really Happened With Superman's Black Suit In Justice League

Superman

People were expecting a lot from Justice League before it arrived in theaters, and a particular group of Superman fans was hoping to see him donning his infamous black-colored suit upon his inevitable resurrection. Ultimately, Justice League settled for a CGI face instead, but we know that there WAS a black suit in play. Fabian Wagner, a cinematographer who worked on Justice League, revealed that a black suit was filmed for the movie, but he's not quite sure on if it was ever meant for the final cut. Here's what he said:

Yeah you know actually, to be totally honest I just can't remember if we were shooting it as a test or if we were actually shooting it as a full scene with the suit. I definitely shot it, but I just can't remember if it was more of a test or a full scene. But definitely seeing the black costume was great. So I'm not 100% sure whether that would have been in the movie anyhow.

Throughout the production of Justice League, little teases were dropped -- mostly by Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder -- that Superman would be wearing a black colored version of his costume. The black suit is worn by Superman after his resurrection in the comic book storyline The Death of Superman, which many thought would be partly adapted into Justice League. And it was...just not with a black suit. Superman was shirtless during the scene and only ever had one costume in the movie. Justice League was affected by highly publicised reshoots, so was the black suit a victim of the cutting room floor? Not exactly.

Cinematographer Fabian Wagner told Collider that he recalls filming a black suit Superman for Justice League, but he can't remember if it was a full scene or just a test. One would figure that Wagner would remember if it was an actual scene for the movie, but Justice League had tons of reshoots and duel directors, so it's probably easy to mix up details like that. It sounds like there's a chance the suit was never going to be in the movie, so it likely wouldn't even be featured in the fan demanded Zack Snyder cut.

In the movie, Superman ends up wearing a brighter version of his red and blue outfit. A lot of Superman's scenes were reshot to make him a more hopeful and positive character. Assuming that the black suit was ever in the movie, then it makes sense that they'd want to cut it. It doesn't really gel with the tone they were going for with Superman in the film.

He might not be wearing a black suit, but you can still catch Superman in Justice League which is still in theaters now. For everything coming in the new year, make sure to visit our 2018 movie release guide.
