The Cloverfield Paradox Trailer Is Shocking And Awesome

For a long time now, Cloverfield 3 has been a total mystery. At first, it was known as God Particle, but then the movie kept getting pushed back and the title was scrapped. It was reported that J.J. Abrams was taking a different approach for the marketing of this movie, building interest in it while basically not revealing anything about it. Well, now we know a lot. The first trailer officially dropped during the Super Bowl, and not only does the movie have direct connections with the first Cloverfield, but the whole movie is going to release on Netflix TONIGHT after the game. Check it out Cloverfield Paradox below.

Originally known as God Particle, the movie is now officially titled as Cloverfield Paradox and is a something of a sequel to the first Cloverfield. The trailer opens with footage from the first movie, complete with the famous shot of the Statue of Liberty's head plummeting onto the street. In the film, the origins of the monster that tears up New York City are never explored (except for one blink-and-you-miss-it hint towards the end) but now, according to this trailer, that answer will finally be revealed in Cloverfield Paradox. Set 10 years later, Paradox follows a team of international astronauts who set forth a chain of events while working to solve a massive energy crisis on Earth.

Okay, there's a lot to pick apart here. So, based on what we knew when the movie was called God Particle, the astronauts were experimenting with a Hadron Collider, which is what I assume that tall cylindrical machine is. Messing with that machine causes a lot of freaky things to happen, including, but not limited to, a severed hand crawling along the floor on its own accord. This writer's best theory right now is that this team of astronauts somehow mess with time and are the cause of the Cloverfield monster's (also known as Clover) rampage 10 years in the past (the movie is called Paradox, after all). This kind of clashes with the supplemental material to Cloverfield that states the monster is from a deep ocean trench on Earth, but Paradox could still confirm or add to that.

Either way, we are going to find out the answer very soon because Cloverfield Paradox is surprisingly launching tonight (!!!) on Netflix right after the Super Bowl. It was recently reported that Netflix was in talks to acquire the movie, and that it would be skipping a theatrical release altogether. This is a big win for Netflix, I have to imagine. Not only does it get another big genre film in its library, but this marketing campaign has sparked a lot of interest in the movie among the film community. This surprise release should draw a lot of attention, but we'll see how it all works out. It's definitely exciting for Cloverfield fans though!

Cloverfield Paradox is directed by Julius Onah and stars Daniel Brühl, Roger Davies, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. The movie releases tonight, February 4, on Netflix. For more big movie releases, check out our 2018 movie premiere guide.
