The Super Bowl Dundee Trailer Is A Really Funny Surprise

Super Bowl trailers have run the gamut from heartfelt and entertaining, to catchy and bizarre over the years. But the Dundee faux-film for Tourism Australia has to be one of the more elaborate and memorable. What once seemed like it could possibly be a real film evolved into an ad with humor and star power. The final Dundee ad aired during the Super Bowl tonight, and while it finally goes meta and acknowledges what it is, it is still a fun delight that was worth the build-up. Take a look below to see the vacation-inspiring culmination of Dundee: The Son of A Legend Returns Home.

What's been great throughout these Dundee spots is how well they use Danny McBride who plays his quintessential Danny McBride character, a clueless and egotistical dude who is desperately looking for approval, much like his roles in Vice Principals and Eastbound & Down. Trying to exude cool and ruggedness while shaving with the Crocodile Dundee bowie knife is just great. The trailer is cinematic throughout but finally takes the turn to tourism ad when Chris Hemsworth starts talking about Australia's pristine beaches. Brian Dundee's disinterest and confusion as Chris Hemsworth touts Australia's many selling points before realizing he is in a commercial is hilarious and on brand for the actor.

We don't get to see everyone who was featured in the previous Dundee spots here, but with only a minute, better to play to your strengths instead of quick-cutting a bunch of Australian celebrities. Chris Hemsworth continues to show why he needs to be in more comedies and this trailer features the one man it needed to, Paul Hogan. Paul Hogan's semi-disgust at such a pale imitation of his iconic character in Danny McBride gives the actor a fun moment and a chance for fans to see him once again donning the legendary bushman's attire.

The one thing this trailer really succeeds at is the one thing it has to. It makes you want to go to Australia. The spot is, in keeping with its theme, very cinematic and highlights the lush beauty and culture of the country that is as well known for it's various snakes and spiders as it is for the many film stars it produces. Chris Hemsworth even mentions that there are great flight deals to Australia right now, which is the primary financial burden for many when taking a trip overseas. Well done Tourism Australia. An ad that sells you and entertains you. I'll take that over another generic car commercial any day.

The only bummer is now I really want this Dundee movie. Alas, in this age of reboots anything is possible, but I'm not holding my breath.
