Who Wonder Woman 2 Is Eyeing To Play The Villain

Kristen Wiig in Ghostbusters

2017 was a packed year for Diana of Themyscira, as we watched her origin story unfold in Wonder Woman and saw her join forces with Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg to defeat Steppenwolf in Justice League. The Amazon heroine's next cinematic appearance will be in Wonder Woman 2, which like its predecessor, will be set decades before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Earlier this week, it was reported that Cheetah will be Wonder Woman 2's main villain, and now it's coming in that Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig is being sought after for the role.

According to Deadline, Kristen Wiig is currently in talks with Warner Bros and DC to play Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. Given that Wiig's acting work has primarily consisted of comedies, hearing her being a contender to play the lead villain in the upcoming DC movie is certainly surprising. The report also mentions that we should find out "quickly" if Wiig indeed signs on to Wonder Woman 2.

From Saturday Night Live and The Last Man on Earth to Bridesmaids and MacGruber, Kristen Wiig has left her mark on the comedy realm and then some in both movies and television. Blockbuster-wise, on the other hand, her biggest credit so far is the Ghostbusters reboot, where she co-starred alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. Wiig also has a little drama experience under her belt, appearing in The Martian (sorry, Golden Globes, I don't consider that a legit comedy) and mother! Playing the lead villain in a superhero movie, though, would be an interesting turn for her career. While the DC movies do insert humorous moments, they're by no means camp fests like Joel Schumacher's Batman movies, so Wiig likely wouldn't be going over the top with this character in Wonder Woman 2, instead needing to take a more restrained approach.

According to numerous reports, Wonder Woman 2 will be set in the 1980s era of the Cold War, seven decades after Diana first stepped foot on man's world during World War I and three decades before she helps Batman and Superman fight Doomsday. While no story details have come in yet, evidently she'll cross paths with Cheetah, who, in this continuity, will be Barbara Ann Minerva, a British anthropologist who becomes the avatar of the cheetah god after stumbling into an ancient ritual taking place in the lost city of Urzkartagan. Supposedly Emma Stone was offered the opportunity to play Cheetah, but she passed on it. So far Gal Gadot is the only confirmed actor to appear in Wonder Woman 2, though Patty Jenkins will be directing again and has been working on the script with Geoff Johns and David Callahan.

Wonder Woman 2 will be released in theaters on November 1, 2019. To find out what else the DCEU has in development, head to our DC movies guide.
