One Thing John Boyega Wants To Do In Episode IX That He Didn't Get To Do In The Last Jedi

Star Wars The Last Jedi Finn vs Phasma

Warning: possible mild spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi! Read ahead at your own risk!

When the trailers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi dropped, one of the coolest sequences teased in the movie involved Finn (John Boyega) facing off against Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie). It was a scene that many fans were pumped to see, but some were surprised by how short the fight actually was when the film finally debuted. Now, it turns out that John Boyega himself was even surprised by the length of the battle, and he wants to see that rectified in Star Wars: Episode IX with a more prolonged duel. The Pacific Rim: Uprising star opened up in a recent interview and explained:

Yeah, man, I didn't expect it to be that quick if I'm being honest with you. I was like, wait, wait, what? He's been like ramped up for a big fight and then it was over in a second. But, hopefully, Finn gets to face someone else or has a fight that's much longer by the way [in Episode IX].

The sequence comes during The Last Jedi's third act, after the eternally badass Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) uses her ship as a light speed missile to take down the First Order fleet. Finn and Phasma stare each other down and get a few good shots in while fighting on the fiery spaceship, but it's ultimately cut short when the First Order officer seemingly drops to her death (although many fans believe that she survives). Now, with Finn emerging as the de facto winner of the fight, Boyega told IGN he wants to be involved with a fight scene that's a lot more work and plays out for a lot longer on the big screen.

Despite John Boyega's remarks about wanting to face off in a longer fight in the next Star Wars movie, we still have very little idea as to how it could all go down. Star Wars: The Last Jedi doesn't leave audiences with a clear idea of who Finn could fight next (it could be Phasma, or it could be someone else), so it's now up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens' J.J. Abrams to come back into the Star Wars franchise fold and craft a movie with an awesome fight scene for Finn.

Of course, given the way other sequences in Star Wars: The Last Jedi play out, it's entirely possible that the fight between Finn and Phasma was always intended to be unexpectedly short. Episode VIII subverts expectations numerous times during its runtime, and some of the chief examples involve the fact that many of the fight scenes that fans wanted to see in the film ultimately never even happen. Rey (Daisy Ridley) doesn't have a full-blown showdown with Snoke (Andy Serkis) before his brutal bisection, and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) never even touch lightsabers during their climactic battle on the salty dunes of Crait.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available on Digital HD on March 13, and the Blu-ray and DVD releases will hit shelves on March 27. Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres in theaters on May 25, and Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters the following year on December 20, 2019.
