Wait, Did Deadpool 2 Cut One Of Its Villains?

Jack Kesy in Juggernaut

Despite Cable being one of Deadpool (annoyed) allies in the comics, the most recent trailer for Deadpool 2 revealed that starting off, the Josh Brolin-portrayed character will be at odds with the Merc with the Mouth. But long before we learned that Cable would serve in an antagonistic capacity, it was reported that The Strain star Jack Kesy had been cast as Black Tom Cassidy, a recurring antagonist in the X-Men mythos. However, now there's word that Kesy's villainous character may not show up in Deadpool 2 after all.

In the most recent episode of Meet The Movie Press, host/The Tracking Board editor-in-chief Jeff Sneider mentioned that he's heard that Jack Kesy was cut from Deadpool 2. Assuming this information is legitimate, it's unclear if Black Tom Cassidy's removal happened after the main shoot concluded (meaning that someone who attended one of the test screenings noted his absence) or if the reshoots have anything to do with it. Either way, despite being the only traditional super villain who was announced to appear in Deadpool 2, we haven't heard anything about how Black Tom Cassidy specifically fits into the story. So although the character being cut from the movie is unconfirmed, it's not terribly surprising if he no longer has any role to play in Wade Wilson's upcoming adventure.

In the comics, Black Tom Cassidy, who is Banshee's cousin, was originally able to generate concussive blasts through any kind of wooden medium, but later his abilities expanded to manipulate energy through plants. Outside of the comics, Black Tom Cassidy has only appeared in a few episodes of X-Men: The Animated Series, so Deadpool 2 would have introduced him to a lot of folks unfamiliar with X-Men comics. Alas, if the character has indeed taken out of Deadpool 2, he'll have to keep waiting for his big cinematic debut.

Fortunately, even if Jack Kesy doesn't show up as Black Tom Cassidy in Deadpool 2, the movie won't be lacking for conflict. As we now know, Cable is targeting a yet-to-be-identified pyrokinetic kid played by Hunt for the Wilderpeople's Julian Dennison. Knowing Cable, presumably he believes that by taking this mutant adolescent out of the picture, that will somehow prevent the depressing future that he grew up in from ever happening. Deadpool stands in Cable's way, but the Merc with the Mouth can't do it alone, resulting in him forming the X-Force, with its members including Zazie Beetz's Domino and Terry Crews' Bedlam. Aside from Cable, the mysterious DMC also looks like it will be causing trouble, both in the future and the present day.

Deadpool 2 opens in theaters on May 18. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news about the sequel, and be sure to look through our X-Men movies guide to learn what mutant-centric cinematic projects are on the way.
