James Cameron Hopes Avengers Fatigue Will Set In Soon

James Cameron complaining about Marvel.

James Cameron has been in the business of making movies for quite some time, and during that time he has cultivated a reputation for being a man who speaks his mind. In fact, just a few months ago we got a taste of this when Cameron took some shots at Wonder Woman after its release. Now, he's back to talking about superhero films ahead of the release of Avengers: Infinity War, and he doesn't have very kind things to say about Disney's latest Marvel- related project. According to Cameron,

I'm hoping we'll start getting 'Avenger' fatigue here pretty soon. Not that I don't love the movies. It's just, come on guys, there are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process. It's like, oy.

On the one hand, between Fox's Marvel movie, Disney's Marvel films, DC's movies and the occasional other superhero project, there is a lot of content about heroes coming to the big screen in this day and age. James Cameron in particular is citing Avengers-related fatigue, so it seems as if he is squarely aiming at Disney's Marvel content, here. Or perhaps he's just tired of superheroes in general and since Avengers: Infinity War just so happens to be the next movie coming up, that's the one he specifically mentioned in his comments while promoting new series AMC Visionaries: James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction (via Indiewire).

To be fair, James Cameron is often as outspoken about his own work as he is of others. He's talked in the past about how Titanic has some major inaccuracies, including depicting how the famous ship actually sank, and that's not even getting into his feelings about the door debate in that movie. Cameron also made some headlines for some alleged beef he reportedly had with Josh Brolin over the actor not joining the cast of Avatar 2. He is, however, in Avengers: Infinity War. So, there could be some lingering feelings about the Marvel movie related to whatever happened with the actor, as well.

Or maybe he's just more into how science fiction worlds work than fun content, as he also mentioned how Guardians of the Galaxy is "fun" where as something like The Martian is "responsible," noting,

We can see the market drives us to a sort of science fiction now that's either completely escapist and doesn't require a technical consultant --- an example of that would be Guardians of the Galaxy. It's just fun. We don't care how those spaceships work or any of that stuff works. And then you have scientifically responsible science fiction like The Martian or Interstellar.

Since the director is involved in several continuations of franchises coming up, it could be that the answer is that James Cameron has simply hit his personal level of superhero fatigue. I know my sister skipped both Wonder Woman and Black Panther because there have been so many superhero movies in recent years, and some have been disappointing. At this point, I'm just trying to get her to Deadpool 2; the point being that there are certainly people out there who have had their fill of superhero movies and are ready for some other trend to take their place. Perhaps that will be Avatar 2 when it finally makes its debut on the big screen -- doubtless that is what James Cameron is hoping, as the movie will need to make plenty of money to earn its budget back.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters on April 27. James Cameron has Avatar 2 set for December 18, 2020. He also has another Terminator-oriented movie coming out even sooner, on November 22, 2019, although that date was also initially expected to be earlier.
