The First Robin Hood Trailer Shows Off Taron Egerton And Jamie Foxx As Heroic Outlaws

Few heroes are more iconic or influential than Robin Hood. The legendary archer paved the way for badasses like Arrow's Oliver Queen and The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen, and he remains a fixture in the pop culture world to this very day. Now the first trailer for Otto Bathurst's 2018 Robin Hood reboot has officially debuted online, and it has Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton and Django Unchained's Jamie Foxx showing off as a couple of badass, iconic heroes. Check out the trailer, below!

One thing is clear: that definitely looks like a modern take on the Robin Hood mythos. With plenty of slow-motion action and archery, the film seems to follow Robin Hood (Taron Egerton) and Little John (Jamie Foxx) as they train to become heroic vigilantes who steal from the rich and give to the poor. There's a large number of notable set-pieces in the movie (showing Robin Hood doing some tomb raiding alongside Eve Hewson's Maid Marian) along with some moments of comradery as the trailer shows off the exploits of our main heroes as the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn) hunts them down.

There is apparently quite a bit of classic Robin Hood DNA in this trailer, but it also looks like the film will take a cue from some modern genre conventions as well. Specifically, it seems like elements of the classic superhero origin story will factor into the film's narrative, as we watch Robin Hood train to become the hero that we all know and love, while also hiding in plain sight at formal events and masquerading as a regular person.

Despite those similarities to the classic thief hero, there are also a fair number of changes that will occur that should help set Robin Hood apart from other classic iterations seen in films like Robin Hood: Men in Tights or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. In fact, while speaking out about the film last year, director Otto Bathurst addressed the mentality of Robin Hood in his movie and explained that he would take the form of a radical revolutionary who rises up against a tyrannical regime. With such an emphasis being placed on a more militarized Robin Hood, it will undoubtedly prove fascinating to see how audiences respond to this rebooted classic.
