Liza Minnelli Is Not Happy About The Judy Garland Biopic

Liza Minnelli Lucille II Arrested Development

The biopic genre has changed and evolved in recent years, with a number of fantastic films like Straight Outta Compton and Steve Jobs offering up interesting looks at real life characters. That said, a biopic inherently comes with a certain amount of risk because it often involves adapting the life of someone with still-living relatives and loved ones. That's something that Judy, the upcoming Judy Garland biopic starring Renee Zellweger, is currently facing, as Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli, has confirmed that she is not happy about the film. In a recent Facebook post, the Academy Award-winner addressed rumors that she approved of the film and wrote:

I have never met nor spoken to Renee Zellweger... I don't know how these stories get started, but I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way. Any reports to the contrary are 100% Fiction.

This Facebook post came after a recent report that Liza Minnelli had met and bonded with Renee Zellweger over the development and production of Judy. In reality, the Arrested Development alum has never met the Bridget Jones actress. Moreover, Minnelli used the post to confirm that she does not condone the upcoming biopic about her mother's life, indicating that there have been erroneous reports of her lending her support and approval to Judy.

Of course, it is worth noting that Liza Minnelli's remarks about the Judy Garland biopic come on the heels of our first look at Renee Zellweger as her mother, which dropped online a few months ago. You can check it out, below.

So while there arguably is a resemblance between the Oscar winner and the woman that she's portraying, it looks like at least one member of Judy Garland's estate isn't thrilled about the situation. Judy Garland is one of those figures that Hollywood has maintained a deep fascination with for years. As such, the development of a biopic based on the Wizard of Oz actress' life has consistently popped up, with different actors reportedly in the running for the role at various points in time. Renee Zellweger is now the actress who will take on the part, but Ocean's 8 actress Anne Hathaway was similarly in the running to take on the role years ago.

For now, CinemaBlend will make sure to bring you more information related to the development and production of Judy as new details are made available to us. The film doesn't currently have a set release date, but you can head over to our movie premiere guide to keep yourself in-the-loop on the 2018 movies that are presently scheduled.
