Another Major Way Thor’s New Axe From Infinity War Is Different Than Mjolnir

Thor with Rocket and Groot

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.

While it was released months ago, Marvel fans are still recovering from the devastating effects of Avengers: Infinity War. The Russo Brothers brought together all of the MCU's biggest characters in an epic battle against Thanos, and they didn't shy away from devastating emotional moments and character deaths. Plenty of iconic heroes changed drastically, including Chris Hemsworth's Thor. In his attempt to destroy Thanos, Thor (and Groot) craft a new Hammer for the hero, called Stormbreaker. Aside from what its made out of, there's another distinction that Stormbreaker has from Mjolnir: you don't have to be "worthy" to wield it. This news comes from The Russo Brothers themselves,

Well, this is a change. While Thor has historically been the only character in the MCU (save for Vision) that could wield his hammer, the axe Stormbreaker is a little more user friendly. We didn't seen any other character use the weapon during the Battle of Wakanda, but this new bit of information possibly opens up things for Avengers 4.

This post from the official Avengers Twitter account is a new bit of information The Russo Brothers shared with Marvel fans during a Vudu Viewing Party. This was just the latest way the directors have tried to communicate directly with the fandom, while also being very active on social media. And with only one more blockbuster on its way before Avengers 4 completes the MCU's decade long narrative, excitement is at a fever pitch.

With the digital and Blu-ray releases of Avengers: Infinity War, all types of new information are coming from The Russos and other members of the production team via special features. Infinity War and Avengers 4 were developed for many years before filming began, and there was a ton of footage that never made it into the film's final cut. While those decisions resulted in one of the universe's strongest installments, there's also plenty of information to be gleaned about the creative process, and small details that we might see played out in the next film.

Since Stormbreaker can be wielded by any Marvel character, one has to wonder if any of the surviving Avengers will take up the weapon during Avengers 4. Half the galaxy was wiped out thanks to Thanos' finger snap, so there's far fewer players in the Russo Brothers' final Marvel blockbuster. All of the members of the original Avengers are still in play, and it would be awesome to see the likes of Captain America or Black Widow grab the weapon to dispatch of some hoes.

All will be revealed when Avengers 4 arrives on May 3rd, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
