With an Atlantean mother and a human father, Arthur Curry walks between two worlds in the DC Comics mythology. He grew up on the surface with humans, but he also has a deep connection with the underwater nation of Atlantis, something he's embraced in the aftermath of Justice League. However, when the Aquaman movie rolls around at the end of the year, Arthur will be caught in the middle of his two worlds, and he'll have to decide which is truly his home, as brought up in a recent TV spot.
Most of the footage from this Aquaman commercial (via YouTuber Nigth 3) recycles footage from the San Diego Comic-Con trailer, but towards the end, we hear Orm, a.k.a. Ocean Master, tell Arthur Curry, his half-brother, that he might as well go home, as he won't win this conflict. If Orm is anything like his comic book counterpart, he doesn't see Arthur as a true Atlantean because he was raised on the surface. And if Aquaman was set before Justice League, then maybe Arthur would agree him. But after teaming up with Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Cyborg in preventing Steppenwolf from turning Earth into another Apokolips, he now feels closer to his maternal heritage. Besides, there's too much at stake for Arthur to just leave Atlantis behind.
As those who watched the Aquaman trailer know, the movie will see Orm declaring war on the surface world, leading Mera to convince Arthur Curry to take his rightful place on the throne. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and that preview made it abundantly clear that Arthur isn't interesting in ruling a nation. In the end, though, he'll fight to be king so that he can stop Orm from attacking the surface. Dealing with that, along with some Black Manta trouble on the side, will keep our intrepid hero busy, but as with most superhero movies, we can likely expect him to emerge from all this craziness victorious. From there, no doubt he'll maintain a balance between looking after Atlantis as its king and the surface world as one of its many superheroes.
Directed by James Wan, Aquaman stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison and Dolph Lundgren, among many others.
