Star Wars’ Poe Dameron Is Getting A Promotion Ahead Of Episode IX

Oscar Issac as Poe Dameron

The following contains spoilers for the Star Wars: Poe Dameron comic book series.

Poe Dameron had one of the more interesting character arcs in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and based on some new information, it appears he truly has learned from his mistakes. In The Last Jedi Poe found himself demoted by General Leia due to his reckless behavior that resulted in the loss of life of many Resistance fighters. However, in the currently running comic book Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Poe has apparently earned a promotion back to the rank of Commander, showing how far he has come.

The currently running story arc of the Star Wars: Poe Dameron comic takes place following the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, when the remaining resistance fighters escaped on board the Millennium Falcon. The newest issue, #31 (via ComicBook.com) sees Poe learn that his Black Squadron is in trouble and he wants to go try and help them. Leia is clearly hesitant to put what little of the Resistance is left at risk, but Poe argues that showing that the resistance won't leave its people behind could actually help rally support for the cause. Eventually, Leia relents, and as she wishes Poe luck, refers to him as Commander Dameron, telling him not to blow it this time.

Poe Dameron's story in Star Wars: The Last Jedi was one of a hot-head who needed to learn how to become a leader. It's a lesson Poe doesn't learn until after he leads an ill-advised mutiny against Admiral Holdo which very nearly gets everybody else killed. Eventually, we see him begin to learn that the job is about protecting people, and he begins to make decisions that are truly best for everybody. While he's certainly looking to put himself at risk in this situation as well, he's doing it to save more lives, something that Leia can at least understand.

Considering Poe's arc in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, combined with the unfortunate death of Carrie Fisher, before Star Wars Episode IX began filing, I fully expected Poe Dameron to be taking on a leadership role in the new movie. Based on the more recent news that General Leia will be in the new movie, via the use of scenes deleted from both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, it seems that promotion may be delayed, but clearly, Poe is back on track, having received his previous rank once again. Depending on how much time will have passed before Star Wars Episode IX it's possible Poe will have received another promotion or two in the interim.

We'll find out where Poe is, as well as the state of the entire Resistance when Star Wars Episode IX arrives in December 2019.
