Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Is Finished, Here's How The Director Celebrated

The coming year is stacked with epic blockbusters. May 2019 alone is filled to the gills with some of the most anticipated films of the year, one of which is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The first trailer for the sequel promised a huge movie filled with monster brawls and titanic special effects, which probably took a titanic effort from the post-production crew. It sounds like the team was firing on all cylinders, because King of the Monsters is finished before its May release date, according to director Michael Dougherty.

Taking place after 2014's Godzilla reboot, Godzilla: King of the Monsters finds the giant lizard once again forced to prove his title as the strongest monster in the world. More ancient titans arise from their slumber, and they all want a piece of Godzilla. Classic monsters like Rodan and Mothra debut in the franchise while Godzilla's arch-nemesis King Ghidorah takes the title fight. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this movie, which will be arriving right on time.

Director Michael Dougherty shared the news via his Twitter page, letting Godzilla fans far and wide know that the post-production team has officially wrapped on Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Dougherty tweeted a heartfelt thanks to the thousands of people who worked on the film and helped make his dream come true.

It's certainly an impressive effort. King of the Monsters isn't slated to arrive until May of next year, which means this movie was finished with months to spare. Considering that some films of this scale are still being worked on one week before release, Mike Dougherty should feel proud of those time-management skills.

It's a good thing that King of the Monsters is done so far ahead, because May is stacked with blockbusters that will be vying to earn all the money. May will see the release of high-profile films like Avengers 4 (though that might get bumped up a week to April), Detective Pikachu, and Aladdin, to name just a few of the big ones. It'll be very interesting to see who comes out on top when there's a new major release each week.

Hopefully, we'll be getting a new trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters soon, but until then fans will just have to wait. The sequel is all set to release on May 31, 2019 and stars Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, and Ken Watanabe. To learn as much as you can about the movie until then, here's what we know so far about the sequel.
