Mission: Impossible Fallout's Honest Trailer Goes In On The Complicated Canon

Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Mission: Impossible - Fallout!

Mission: Impossible - Fallout is now available on home media, and with it, audiences can enjoy one of the best action movies of the year from the comfort of their own abode. The release of Mission: Impossible - Fallout also means its time for an Honest Trailer of the film, and this one goes all in on the franchise's complicated canon. Check it out:

This Honest Trailer makes a great and hilarious point about how convoluted and complicated the canon of the Mission: Impossible franchise can be. Audiences are asked to remember and juggle a lot. I think it gets overlooked because of how watchable and entertaining these films are, especially Fallout, but it's a salient point.

The trailer touches on how many of Ethan Hunt's on and off screen lovers you need to keep track of, the similar evil organizations that show up in these kinds of movies and all of the famous actors that have been a part of this 22+ year old franchise, only to disappear and never be seen again, with little to no explanation for their absence.

And that's just the franchise as a whole; the Honest Trailer also brings up how it's not just the audience members who might be confused, even the characters in Mission: Impossible - Fallout aren't really sure what's going on. It's enough to make you wonder how any missions, impossible or otherwise ever get accomplished.

The Honest Trailer also jokes about how this movie, like Avengers: Infinity War earlier this year, features a villain that wants to wipe out a huge percentage of the population in order to achieve peace. This greater good approach is a favorite of villains like Thanos and Ozymandias, but it isn't the most original plan.

Naturally, Screen Junkies also couldn't resist touching on a few of the meta aspects to Mission: Impossible - Fallout. First, with regard to the injury Tom Cruise suffered on set making this film, the trailer brings up our complicity as audience members, as we keep flocking to these movies as Tom Cruise risks life and limb for our entertainment.

The bit about the danger these movies post to Tom Cruise's life is made ever the more potent given that we recently heard Christopher McQuarrie say that the actor already has big ideas for Mission: Impossible 7. Exciting? Yes. Potentially worrying? Also yes.

It also wouldn't be a discussion of Mission: Impossible Fallout without a reference to Mustachegate and this Honest Trailer gets another joke in about the facial hair powerful enough to cripple the DCEU. Other highlights include the Tom Cruise "hang and balance" joke and the trailer credit for the action star as "Thetan Hunt." Clever stuff.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout is now available on Digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. For all the latest in complicated canons, stay tuned to CinemaBlend, and be sure to check out our 2019 Release Schedule for all the biggest movies heading to theaters next year.
