Typically, when it comes to the security of the script to a film like Avengers: Endgame, you’d expect a certain level of secrecy with the finished product. We saw this in play when Tom Holland admitted he didn’t have a complete script to the film, but as luck would have it, he wasn’t the only person who didn’t have the full story. In fact, according to Chris Hemsworth, no one could have had a completed copy if they’d tried, as the film’s script wasn’t even finished.
During his appearance at this weekend’s ACE Comic Con, Hemsworth told the following story about his experience with the script to Avengers: Endgame:
We got a script, or parts of the script and it was a very odd version of the script. You could go and sit in a room and read the script but to be honest, it wasn't even completed. The second half of shooting that movie was completely in their hands and being guided by what they had in store for you.)
With a film that contained such surprises as The Hulk's arm being permanently injured, Tony Stark sacrificing his life for the good of the planet, and, of course, Fat Thor, it’s no wonder that Avengers: Endgame had to play its cards close to its chest. However this piece of news from Chris Hemsworth’s ACE Comic Con panel (obtained via ComicBook.com) is still pretty amazing in light of how the final film performed.
Because both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame shot back to back, there were some scenes shot out of order and without proper context. So an incomplete script sounds about right when it comes to how the film was eventually tailored to be the two part masterpiece that broke records and shattered even the most bullish of expectations.
Still, looking back on how intricate the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned out to be in its first three phases, you have to wonder how much better it might have been if the full story had been put into the hands of the actors helping bring the Infinity Saga’s story to the world. That's a concern that reaches back to even Spider-Man: Far From Home’s production.
It may not have been that big of a jump in quality, as the cast seemed to be pretty on the ball with their content, but at the same time there might have been an added layer that brought everyone that much more joy.
We’ll never know what might have been with Chris Hemsworth and company having full scripts, but we do know this much: this process may or may not be the reason that Gwyneth Paltrow couldn’t seem to remember certain details pertaining to the MCU films. So do with that as you may, true believers.
