Bonnie Tyler To Sing Total Eclipse Of The Heart During The Eclipse, Because She's Amazing

On August 21, the United States will experience a total eclipse of the sun. It will be the first eclipse to cross all of the US since 1918. To mark the occasion, Royal Caribbean thought up a special event for passengers on its Oasis of the Seas cruise during the historic moment. The company booked 1980s rock legend Bonnie Tyler to sing her classic 1984 hit "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on board while the eclipse passes over the ship.

Royal Carribean is touting the experience as an unforgettable seven-night cruise that gives passengers a chance to witness "the Great American Eclipse." The company says the tour is worthy of any adventurer's bucket list. In a statement, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, emphasized how long it has been since a total eclipse has passed over all of America. Bayley explained that somehow "the stars aligned" so that people could experience the event from the perfect point on the sea. So, the company called up Bonnie Tyler and booked her to sing the classic song. (The stars aligned, indeed. In fact, the Sun, the Moon, and Earth are aligning as well.)

The cruise will depart from Orlando, Florida. It will take passengers on a luxurious excursion from Phillipsburg, St. Maarten to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas to Nassau, Bahamas. The journey sounds incredible in and of itself, but tack on the chance to see the total eclipse of the sun, and the event moves from incredible to magical. Then the fact that the one-and-only Bonnie Tyler will be there to sing "Total Eclipse of the Heart" makes your mind explode.

In an interview with Time, Bonnie Tyler indicated her excitement. Tyler revealed she had to chop up the lengthy rock ballad and reorganize it to fit with the timing of the eclipse, which will last for two minutes and 40 seconds. After all, the album version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is six minutes and 59 seconds long.

In the early '80s, Bonnie Tyler worked with Jim Steinman, one of Meat Loaf's producers, to create "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Tyler said it took three weeks to record and tinker with the song, and when she heard the final result, it made her cry because she loved it so much. The song was the fifth-best-selling song of 1983, and it catapulted Tyler to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Since then, the track has sold more than six million copies. In the interview, Tyler praised the beloved song and said,

It's a massive song, an evergreen song that you hear on the radio all the time, whether it's an eclipse or not.

That might be true, but reportedly the song gets a spike in popularity on radio and music outlets like Spotify when there is an eclipse. So, get ready to see it pop up a lot on social media in the coming days. Come to think of it, Royal Carribean ought to live stream the event. It sounds like a moment many of us would love to see.
