Why Marriage Is Hard, According To Pink

Pink has long talked about the ups and downs of her marriage to Carey Hart. Now the 38-year-old music legend is back with a new album, Beautiful Trauma, and some tracks deal with her relationship. Hence, Pink is again opening up about her romance. Back in 2008, Pink was singing "I guess I just lost my husband" on "So What," a track addressing her second separation from Hart. But today, she and Hart seem to be more in love than ever, and they have two kids to boot. Still, in a recent interview, Pink said there are times when love turns to loathing. She explained,

There are moments where I look at [Hart], and he is the most thoughtful, logical, constant... he's like a rock. He's a good man. He's a good dad. He's just the kind of dad I thought he'd be and then some. And then I'll look at him and go: I've never liked you. There's nothing I like about you. We have nothing in common. I don't like any of the shit you like. I don't ever wanna see you again. Then two weeks later I'm like, things are going so good, you guys. Then you'll go through times when you haven't had sex in a year. Is this bed death? Is this the end of it? Do I want him? Does he want me? Monogamy is work! But you do the work, and it's good again.

Love and marriage are hard work. Not enough people in Hollywood talk about the realities of monogamy. Yes, Pink implied she and Carey Hart went through a sexless year, but she did not give details. Oddly, it sounds like the year without sex might have happened during a relative upswing in their relationship. Pink and Hart have been to and from Splitsville at least twice, so maybe lying in bed together at all was an improvement from being split up on separate locations.

But Pink has never shied away from tough topics, so why would this talk with The Guardian be any different? In her early career, she spoke out about other artists. Nowadays, she speaks about the regrets she feels after getting caught in petty drama. Plus, in her music, she covers everything from domestic abuse to intrinsic beauty to strength to hot-button political issues. Thus, talking about her real-life, modern-day marriage comes naturally.

Pink and Carey Hart broke up and got back together in 2003 and then said, "I do," in 2006. Two years later, they took a break, and as mentioned, Pink incorporated the separation into songs. By the end of 2008, they were back together. Fast forward ten years, and it appears their relationship is still on the up and up. Plus, they seem to be over the moon as parents to their little ones--their six-year-old daughter, Willow, and their ten-month-old son, Jameson.

In fact, Pink seems super centered and contemplative now. Somehow, when Pink reflects on the complicated times in her marriage, it sounds like she is coming from a warm place. She seems happy and secure in her relationship, though she and her professional motocross champion husband have awful days--and awful years. This is part of what makes Pink one of the greats. She is unabashedly honest, and we love her for it.
