We all make mistakes; it's human nature. Sometimes, we're bound to slip up, speak out of turn, or say or do something that we ultimately regretted. Armie Hammer had one of those situations this week, and it got plenty of media attention.
Upon the death of Marvel mastermind Stan Lee, thousands of fans and work colleagues of the late comic book creator posted pictures of themselves beside Lee, and Armie Hammer felt people were directing attention onto themselves instead of the person they meant to mourn. Hammer posted on Twitter about his anger and he got a lot of angry responses in return. Now, Hammer admits he did the wrong thing, and he apologized for what he said on social media. He even thanked Jeffrey Dean Morgan for calling him "an asshat."
While attempting to provide some unnecessary social commentary about the current selfie culture, I (in true asshat form -- thank you Jeffrey Dean Morgan) inadverently offended many who were genuinely grieving the loss of a true icon. I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart and will be working on my Twitter impulse control.
The Twitter apology finds Armie Hammer owning up to his mistakes, confessing that he was being a real "asshat," and hoping folks forgive his misstep. If Stan impacted your life (ie. All of our lives) with his work, post his work that touched you the most. Posting a selfie makes his death about you and how cool you felt taking a picture with him.
Stan Lee passed away at the age of 95 on Monday, leaving many fans of the comic book mastermind to mourn his death but also celebrate his life and his deep love and appreciation for his fans. Lee has taken thousands upon millions of photos with fans over the years at conventions and other public events. Therefore, tons of people have pictures of themselves alongside the famous face of Marvel.
Armie Hammer felt these selfies were people trying to make the death of an icon about themselves, but he learned the hard way that it's the way people choose to remember the legacy Lee left behind. This included being name called in another deleted tweet by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
