A familiar face on the big and small screen for years before her biggest break to date, actress Stana Katic was a primetime mainstay for seven years as one-half of Castle's lead pair. And though her sudden ousting from the drama ahead of its cancellation and finale left a bad taste in viewers' mouths, no love was lost for Katic herself. Thankfully, she's got a new show called Absentia coming that sounds really interesting, and it dropped its spooky first look trailer, which you can watch below.
It kind of makes one claustrophobic just watching it, right? It's not immediately obvious what's happening, as personal effects float by the camera in a room filled with what is assumedly water. But it starts to become clear that these are things that are being stripped away from the main character Emily Byrne, played by Stana Katic, who wakes up from her floating slumber and attempts to escape the...room...box...thing she's trapped in. This obviously isn't a literal translation of what will happen to her in the show, but it's a well-crafted metaphor.
Let's discuss the plot to add some context to the sopping wet video seen above. In Absentia, Stana Katic's Emily Byrne is an FBI agent who disappears while tracking down one of Boston's most deadly serial killers. She's missing for six years, having long been declared dead, when she later reappears still alive out inside a cabin out in the middle of the woods. Unfortunately, she has no idea how she got there, or anything else for that matter, and she returns to an unfamiliar life where her son is being raised by her husband and his new wife. Making matters worse is that she soon gets roped into a new series of murders that begin happening. All in all, it sounds like the kind of show that would pair perfectly with that trailer above: murky and loose with its discomfort.
Now, while we're thankful that this show and trailer exists, we're a little less thankful that we still don't have any idea how we'll be able to watch Absentia. Strangely enough, Absentia was created by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick, is a U.S. series from Sony Pictures' AXN network, but it currently doesn't have a release date set for domestic audiences. Filmed in Bulgaria and directed by Oded Ruskin, the thriller is confirmed for premieres in Spain, Portugal, Canada and more, but no American networks have picked it up just yet. I have to hopefully assume there's a logical reason for that, since this show could be an easy hit, depending on where it lands. (Interestingly, perhaps, AXN recently went into development on a new show that sounds a lot like Castle.)
