Grey's Season 14 Is Making Changes That Some Fans Are Going To Love

The Residents from Grey Sloan Memorial

There are long running TV shows, and then there's ABC's Grey's Anatomy. The medical drama is gearing up to begin its whopping 14th season this fall, with one surgeon leaving the program and another from the past showing up after multiple years. And in addition to the staff changes both behind and in front of the camera, Season 14 is also planning to make another big change to the series. Namely, the new season will be much lighter than the previous few installments. And considering how just about every character has had at least one near death experience, our favorite Seattle surgeons deserve some levity in their lives.

News of this change comes to us from actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays resident surgeon Andrew DeLuca on Grey's. When speaking about the 14th season, he revealed the news, saying:

It's funnier, it's sexier, it's lighter. We're going to have fun this season. There's just been a lot of separation and loss, so we want to show the characters having some fun. Also, a lot of the men are single now, so we're going to explore what that dynamic is like.

Pour the tequila and get ready to dance it out, because Grey's Anatomy is going back to its roots and lightening things up a bit. Although the show will no doubt contain plenty of ugly-cry moments, the overall feel of Season 14 seems much more casual and fun than the past few seasons.

Changing the tone of Grey's Anatomy sounds like a great plan, especially considering how long the show has been running. While casual audiences may no longer be invested in the professional and personal lives of the surgeons at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, the loyal fanbase continues to tune in every week. And in order to keep the fandom intrigued, Grey's needs to change things up every now and then. Making the series overall more light will be a nice way to keep the series interesting, while also ensuring that the sadder moments pack even more of an emotional punch.

Speaking of the sad moments (aka Grey's Anatomy's bread and butter), we should still expect plenty of tear jerking moments in the show's 14th season. Grey's is known for its heartbreaking sequences and horrifying character deaths, although it looks like many of these moments may happen this season due to the patients who the surgeons attempt to save. Ciacomo Gianniotti told TV Line this, saying:

You're still going to need the tissue box every Thursday, because our guest stars are going to be coming in with new [medical] problems and crazy hospital scenarios.

Well, that's a relief. Grey's Anatomy without heartbreaking drama wouldn't be Grey's at all.

Grey's Anatomy will return to ABC for Season 14 on September 28, 2017. In the meantime, check out our fall premiere list to plan your next binge watch.
