American Gods Is Going Through Big Changes Behind The Scenes

One of the most highly-anticipated new series of 2017 had to be American Gods on Starz, and the first season was complex and creative in the best way. The show was renewed for a second season after only two episodes had aired in what was a huge show of faith from Starz, and showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were expected to remain on board. Now, however, we know that a big change is happening behind the scenes, and all because of Fuller and Green. They have left American Gods as showrunners.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green announced their departure to the American Gods cast on November 29, according to Deadline. There has been no official statement about why the duo is departing. A fair amount of progress has already been made on Season 2. More than half of the scripts for the ten-episode second season have already been written. The show is reportedly searching for a new showrunner. Neil Gaiman -- a.k.a. the author of the book that inspired the TV series -- may join the series in a more active role as a co-showrunner although he is currently working on an adaptation of Good Omens for Amazon. Gaiman already contributes to the series as an executive producer.

Both Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have other projects in development, so the two men won't exactly be out of work now that they've left American Gods. Bryan Fuller is working on an Amazing Stories reboot for Apple, and he previously put a good deal of work into Star Trek Discovery as creator/showrunner/executive producer, although he left that project while the first season was being developed. As for Michael Green, he is writing the sequel to the recent Murder on the Orient Express film.

American Gods was originally slated to return to Starz at some point in mid-2018. There's a chance that the premiere will be pushed back if the search for a new showrunner takes a while, but we'll have to wait and see.
