Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally kicked off Season 5 last week, and it revealed that Fitzsimmons has been split up yet again. Fitz and Simmons have been split apart for at least a chunk of every season starting with Season 2, and it has only gotten more heartbreaking since they transitioned from best friends to love interests. They're farther apart than ever in Season 5, with Simmons in outer space and a future in which the Earth was destroyed while Fitz was left behind on Earth in the present timeline. Fitz's statement that they're cursed feels more and more accurate, but actor Iain De Caestecker has more positive thoughts about Fitzsimmons' future, saying this about the curse claim:
They've faced some real tough shit but no. I think the reason they're not cursed is often through it all they managed to find a way through it together and they don't work as well separately as they do together. They kind of complete each other and that sounds really cheesy doesn't it? But no, they're cursed in the sense that theoretically if you look at their track record.
According to Iain De Caestecker, Fitz and Simmons aren't cursed even if they have faced all kinds of trials. If anything, they seem to have a sort of twisted good luck. Sure, they've faced everything from Simmons being sucked to another planet to an evil Fitz existing in a digital framework, but they've always come back to each other. Besides, there's a reason they've been known as "Fitzsimmons" in the show from their very first scene. They elevate each other as scientists, and we can bet that they wouldn't accomplish nearly as much apart as they would as a unit.
At least Simmons probably won't end up with a space boyfriend during this particular venture into outer space. When she was sucked into space via monolith for Season 3, she ended up on a deserted planet with only one other person for company and no hope of rescue. In Season 5, she's at least surrounded by a whole lot of other people, although what happened to her in the season premiere may keep her isolated from her friends for quite a while.
For his part, Fitz didn't even appear in the premiere, and there's no saying where he is or what he's doing. Best case scenario, he was simply left behind at the diner and is free to try and figure out how to bring everybody home. Worst case scenario, he's a captive for one of the nefarious organizations that always seem to have an eye on S.H.I.E.L.D. We'll have to wait and see. Hopefully the show at least gives Fitzsimmons a way to communicate at some point, even if we have to wait for the reunion.
Elizabeth Henstridge, who plays Simmons, has similar comments about whether she believes Fitzsimmons are cursed:
No I don't! No I don't! I think they are members of S.H.I.E.L.D. is what they are.
The course of true love never does run smooth when S.H.I.E.L.D. is involved, and Fitzsimmons may never get a happily-ever-after unless they retire to a small cottage in Scotland. Still, it should be fun to watch them both as a unit and individually in Season 5 as they face brand new obstacles. Fitz may need to seek help from an unlikely source, and Simmons may need all her wits about how her now that she's a servant of the Kree.
