Warning: Spoilers ahead for the fall finale of Chicago P.D. Stop reading now if you haven't caught up!
The Season 5 fall finale of Chicago P.D. finally exposed the mole who's been helping Denny Woods work to take down Hank Voight. Now, we have some idea of how that information is going to affect Intelligence going forward. Patrick John Flueger, who plays Adam Ruzek (a.k.a. the mole), believes that having his character's covert activities exposed is actually going to deepen some of the relationships between the members of Intelligence. Here's what he had to say on what we can expect when the show returns:
I think it's only going to make Ruzek's relationship with the two characters, Voight and Olinsky -- but especially with Voight -- deeper...Voight's big thing is, "Tell me the truth so I can lie for you." But he knows family; he killed a guy over his son. I don't think it's lost on Voight that Ruzek's sister could be in a lot of trouble. She probably had a few sips too many and blew over the limit, but if she gets the book thrown at her, she could lose her son -- at least for a period of time. The fact that Ruzek was caught between a rock and a hard place, I don't think that's lost on Voight.
That is an interesting way to look at things, for sure. The last we saw of Ruzek in the finale, he was staring down an (I'm sure) angry as hell Voight in an abandoned factory's parking lot at night after having been driven there by Olinsky under the guise of meeting a C.I. The episode craftily ended before we could see or hear any of the confrontation that's to come between Voight and Ruzek, but I can imagine that there will be some super tense moments coming up as the young detective tries to explain himself to this man he's come to consider family, and whom he knows to be super dangerous especially when pushed.
But, no one can deny that what Patrick John Flueger told Entertainment Tonight in the wake of Ruzek being found out is true. Voight absolutely understands what people can be pushed to do when it comes to protecting (or avenging) their family. In the fall finale, Voight let a judge walk free who murdered a pill pusher that had sold drugs to his daughter that she ended up dying from. Of course, he mainly did this to get the name of the mole out of the judge, but I have a feeling that, even if that hadn't been an issue right now, Voight would have let the man go anyway.
One of the points that was driven home near the end of the episode is that officers, especially the ones in the Intelligence Unit, are a family. As Olinsky was driving Ruzek to meet Voight, he told him how he considers Ruzek a son. And, prior to that, when Ruzek had his last meeting with Woods, he turned him down by telling him that Voight and the rest of the unit is just as much family as his sister and nephew, so he couldn't give Woods what he wanted after all.
As things stand right now, though, we don't know if Voight realizes that Ruzek told Woods off. But, it sounds like while Voight will be pissed, he might also quickly come to understand the difficult position Ruzek was in by trying to keep his sister out of trouble and getting caught. Of course, all of this could have been avoided if Ruzek had gone to Voight right after his sister got in trouble, anyway. So, let's hope he's learned his lesson.
