Doctor Who Vet Karen Gillan Is Totally Down For Amy Pond To Return And Meet Jodie Whittaker's Doctor

Amy Pond Karen Gillan Doctor Who The BBC

Karen Gillan might be a big shot movie star now, but that doesn't mean she's done with the Doctor Who franchise. Gillan recently spoke to CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg about her latest role in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and the two touched on The BBC series and the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. Gillan expressed her love for the show's decision to take the plunge and let a woman play the role, and added she's totally down to returning as Amy Pond for an adventure with the new Doctor:

Oh, I would definitely be open to that! I'm so excited that there's gonna be a female Doctor. I know that she's gonna be amazing. She's one of the best actresses in the U.K., so the role couldn't be in better hands. It's just gonna be so exciting for all the skeptics, because of course a woman can play the role, and we're excited to see it happen. And yeah! I think Amy Pond would get on really well with her. I mean, I haven't seen her version of the Doctor yet, but I think she would be impressed by her.

Karen Gillan had expressed her excitement of Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who casting in the past to CinemaBlend, but her willingness to return to the series is all-new information. Gillan returning to the role of Amy Pond would certainly get Jodie Whittaker's run on Doctor Who off to a great start, and one would imagine The BBC won't say no to Gillan returning to the series, given her increased celebrity. Gillan's response appeared to indicate there are no current discussions in bringing her back to the series, but hopefully, her openness about returning will get some of the show's writers brainstorming on a way to bring Amy back.

Bringing back Amy Pond might be the biggest problem Doctor Who could face in this situation, as Amy and Rory's exile to the past was necessary to save Manhattan from the Weeping Angels. That said, Doctor Who has explained away far more complicated plotlines in the past, so there has to be a way to bring her back to the current story somehow. After all, this is the same show that found no problem in casting Gillan as Pond even though she had appeared in a minor role prior to that, so they aren't going to let a little thing like continuity get in the way of any more Amy and Doctor fun:

That said, bringing back Amy Pond when her timeline has been so thoroughly laid out will be difficult to do without her husband Rory, and there's no word on whether or not Arthur Darvill is down for a return as well. Getting both actors to sign on would be a tall order for Doctor Who, but Chris Chibnall should make it happen if he wants to win the hearts of fans during his run. Of course, Chibnall's recent actions indicate he isn't a big fan of using anything from the Steven Moffat era, so we'll just have to cross our fingers and hope that doesn't extend to characters.

Season 11 of Doctor Who is coming to BBC America in fall 2018. For more on upcoming shows in 2018, visit our midseason premiere guide.
