Grey’s Managed To Pay Tribute To Three Characters In The Season 14 Finale

The doctors trying to save the wedding planner

Spoilers ahead for the Season 14 finale of Grey's Anatomy.

With the blink of an eye, another season of Grey's Anatomy has come to a close. The long running medical drama just wrapped its whopping 14th season on ABC, and delivered some really strong moments. The pressure was on for the episode to write off two of the show's long standing leads, April Kepner (Sarah Drew) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw). The finale certainly provided that, and also brought in a fitting tribute to Sara Ramirez' Callie Torres in the process. Here's how it all went down.

Rather than an episode entirely focused on Arizona and April, they were merely wedding guests who were attempting to get through the day. April is essentially Jo and Alex's wedding planner, and has meticulously scheduled every aspect of the ceremony. Through the crazy day, April and Matthew make their debut to the surgeons since their reunion, confront feelings about their own failed wedding, as well as come face to face with Jackson. April is ultimately revealed to have gotten a job helping homeless communities in the city, leaving her trauma surgeon career after her recent near death experience. She and Matthew get married in a small ceremony, so April finally got her happy ending.

Throughout the long wedding day, Arizona reveals that she's been talking with Callie more, and once again feels that spark of romantic excitement. While Sara Ramirez didn't show up onscreen, it was fun to have Callie be apart of the fabric of Grey's Anatomy's once again. They didn't explain why she didn't make it to Alex's wedding, but she and Perfect Penny broke up.

While it was exciting to think that Calzona could be getting back together, Grey's upped the ante by including Sara Ramirez' stunning singing voice during the final scene. Ramirez's cover of Brandi Carlile's "The Story" from the musical episode helped momentarily bring the beloved orthopedic surgeon back onto the show, especially as her primary love interest left for good. With the writers once again uniting Callie and Arizona in New York, suddenly their years of separation don't feel quite as devastating for the fans.

Arizona and April's departures are reportedly due to a writing issue. Grey's Anatomy's writers simply don't know what do with the pair of surgeons after a decade on the air, so they're being moved along to make room for more exciting prospects. One of the upcoming changes includes a more concrete return from Kim Raver's Teddy Altman. She was given the position of interim chief while Bailey takes a sabbatical, and she's pregnant! Is it Owen's? Will he have two babies at once? The possibilities are endless.

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays on ABC, and should return this fall. In the meantime, check out our midseason premiere list to plan your next binge watch. Plus our superhero premiere list and Amazon premiere list to ensure you don't miss a single episode.
