Star Trek And The Munsters Actor Roger Perry Dies At 85

Captain Christopher Roger Perry Star Trek CBS

Hollywood has lost another one of its industry veterans, as longtime actor Roger Perry has passed away. Perry, who was seen in a wide variety of projects ranging from Star Trek to The Munsters, died Thursday, July 12 at his home in Indian Wells, California. The cause was a long battle with prostate cancer. The actor, who also spent time in the film industry as well as theater, was 85.

Roger Perry got his start in Hollywood after being discovered by the beloved Lucille Ball, who promptly got the actor on board as a Desilu contract player in 1959. Perry gained notoriety in television throughout anthology appearances, but soon moved beyond that after his role as James Harrigan Jr. on the 1960 drama Harrigan and Son. From there, Perry made several guest star appearances in roles throughout the next few decades, and sometimes made multiple appearances on the same show as different characters. Perry maintained consistent work in Hollywood until about 1985, but would continue sporadic appearances in film and television up until 2010. The actor's last credited acting appearance was in the horror film Wreckage, which starred Aaron Paul and was directed by Perry's stepson John Asher.

Some television fans may remember Perry as John Costello on the CBS soap opera Falcon Crest, or perhaps as Charles Parker on The Facts of Life, although the actor is most recognized for his role in one of Star Trek's most memorable episodes. Roger Perry played 20th Century Air Force pilot Captain John Christopher, who was beamed aboard the Enterprise in the episode "Tomorrow Is Yesterday." Perry's death was recognized by several Star Trek fans on Twitter and other social media platforms, and was specifically mentioned by the official Star Trek Twitter:

Roger Perry's career in film wasn't quite as prolific as his career in television, although some may remember him as doctor James Hayes in the Count Yorga, Vampire franchise. Perry strayed away from the spotlight in his later years but continued to impact the world with his talent by performing in benefit programs for children's programs and charity. Perry's legacy continues even in death, as Variety reported the family of the actor requested in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the organization he and his wife founded, the River Bridge Regional Center for Abused Children. Perry is survived by his wife, brother, children, and grandchild.

CinemaBlend would like to offer its condolences to the family of Roger Perry and wish them well during this difficult time.
