Star Wars: The Clone Wars Is Coming Back, Here's What We Know

Following the release of Revenge of the Sith in 2005, the live action Star Wars film series went on hiatus for a decade, but fans of the franchise were still treated to adventures set a galaxy far, far away on screen. Star Wars: The Clone Wars launched with a theatrical movie in summer 2008, and the TV show itself ran for five full seasons, with the 13-episode Season 6 later airing on Netflix. But in the years since then, many Star Wars fans have been clamoring for The Clone Wars to be brought back, and good news for them, their voices have been heard! It's just been announced that The Clone Wars is "reporting for another tour of duty," and you can watch the video revealing the big news, below.

Having already "lived" at Cartoon Network and Netflix, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con that Star Wars: The Clone Wars will air 12 all-new episodes on the Disney streaming service, which launches next year. As we see in the above video, favorites like Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Captain Rex and more will be back. And judging by the tagline, "A war unfinished... until now," this Clone Wars revival will take us to the end of the conflict between the Republic and Separatists, thus leading into the events of Revenge of the Sith. The below Clone Wars poster also debuted at the show's SDCC panel.

Speaking with Star Wars.com, Star Wars: The Clone Wars showrunner Dave Filoni didn't provide any plot details on what to expect from this new batch of episodes, but he did talk about how "rewarding" it is to finally be able to finish the series, saying:

Any opportunity to put the final pieces of the story in place is meaningful as a storyteller. I'm happy for the opportunity to define these things and the end of this part of the Clone War. It also makes me reflect on all the people that I got to work with over the years. It reinforces the things I learned from George. It reminds me of the important elements that go into making Star Wars. So, it's nice on several levels, and I think for the crew that's still here that worked on Clone Wars, they feel that, as well.

Although Star Wars: The Clone Wars wrapped up its broadcast run in 2014 and the Netflix episodes dropped in 2014, elements of this corner of the Star Wars mythology were touched upon in its successor series, Star Wars Rebels. This included major Clone Wars players like Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex and Darth Maul appearing in several episodes. But now fans can find out what these characters were up to in the final chapter of the Clone Wars.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates about Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but rest assured, these 12 new episode won't be the last Star Wars content we see churned out for television. A live action series is also in the works for the Disney streaming service, and the animated Star Wars Resistance will air on Disney XD this fall. In the meantime, don't forget to check out our summer premiere schedule.
