Mayans M.C. Will Crossover With Sons Of Anarchy, According To Kurt Sutter

Mayans M.C. creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James have made it clear they want their new series to stand on its own without a heavy reliance on Sons of Anarchy, but that doesn't mean it will be devoid of any references. In fact, Sutter recently confirmed that the two shows will crossover at certain points in the series, with the first reference happening in the series' premiere in September. As the creator revealed at TCA:

It's a flashback to eight years ago and a way of letting us know that he's in Stockton where the two worlds will collide, at least in memory.

Kurt Sutter revealed the series premiere of Mayans M.C. will feature a flashback that will put a well known Sons of Anarchy star in the same location as the Mayans characters via a flashback. The appearance won't be a direct crossover between the two shows, as Sutter has explained he wants to avoid any present-day Sons of Anarchy tales getting in the way of the new story. That said, many are tuning in to this new adventure primarily due to their love for the SOA franchise, so these flashbacks and various other nods seem to be a compromise that should keep both Sutter and fans satisfied.

We're about to get into some spoilers from here on out! As for who Sons of Anarchy fans can expect to see in the premiere of Mayans M.C., Kurt Sutter revealed his wife Katey Sagal will reprise her role as Gemma Teller Morrow. Sutter didn't reveal much more to reporters at the TCA summer press tour (via EW) about Gemma's appearance, although as explained above, it appears the primary purpose behind showing her is to highlight the Mayans crew's presence in Stockton. Sagal, for obvious reasons, won't be appearing in the present day, but Sutter explained that she and other beloved characters from back in the day will have an opportunity to make fresh appearances through the flashbacks of Mayans M.C.

Sons of Anarchy fans disappointed by this news shouldn't lose all hope Mayans M.C. won't lead to fresh stories involving Jax Teller, however, as Kurt Sutter revealed he hasn't given up on his idea for a prequel series involving the characters father, John Teller. The creator assured press he's still interested in pursuing that project, and that Mayans M.C. could help make it happen:

I love the idea of doing the first 10 of a prequel. It would be a 10-off. I'll try to find a way to introduce that during the course of the Mayans.

Mayans M.C. premieres on FX Tuesday, September 4 at 10:00 p.m. ET. The premiere is not long off, but there's still plenty of shows on our summer premiere guide worth checking out before the spinoff makes its television debut.
