Krypton just released the first look at their version of alien bounty hunter Lobo, and while it's pretty true to what those who've seen the character in DC comics and cartoons are used to, he's also got a hard rock vibe that should really help shake up the show. Actor Emmett J. Scanlan is taking on the part for the sophomore run of the series, and he seems to have it down already. Take a look:
Well, now. Let's see...Guns a'poppin? Check. Muscular, exposed torso? Check. White skin? Check. Long, dark, voluminous hair? Check? Scowl? Check. Chain wrapped arm? Check. Red eyes? Check. Face paint and attitude that would have him fitting right in on stage at a Rob Zombie concert? Check, check, check! You might have also noticed that Scanlan is outfitted in Lobo's signature fanged skull decorative pant ornament. While this is usually shown as being a belt buckle of sorts, it appears as though Krypton has decided to switch things up a bit and have the character use it as more of a cod piece. What can I say? I can't complain about it. Though, I do feel like he needs a more impressive layer of white all over to really make his Kiss-like eye adornment pop, but I can withhold full judgement until I actually see Lobo in action on the drama.
While a Lobo movie has been hovering around various stages of development for nearly two decades, Krypton has beaten everyone to the punch by giving fans their first live-action version of the character. The Superman prequel series takes place two generations prior to the destruction of the Man of Steel's home planet, and follows his grandfather, Seg-El, as he deals with political strife on his homeworld while trying to save it. The Season 1 finale of Krypton did tease Lobo, but we have no idea why the character will be sticking around in Season 2. Right now, Emmett J. Scanlan is being billed as recurring on the show, so he, and Lobo, will be hanging out with at least some of our main players for a bit.
The badass alien will likely be causing some trouble when he arrives. Lobo is known for being a genius when it comes to fighting and the ins and outs of warfare, so he's one hell of an adversary. He's also in possession of superhuman strength and is virtually immortal, so if he sets out to capture a bounty, you can believe that he's capable of staying on that track until the job is done. Lobo is also known for keeping his word in the highest regard, and while he won't go against the strictest letter of an agreement, he's completely likely to violate the spirit of any agreements whenever he deems it necessary. So, while Lobo is typically portrayed as a villain/anti-hero, he might end up on the side of the good guys, but even that will probably be a tenuous partnership.
Emmett J. Scanlan, for his part, has amassed dozens of TV and film appearances since he first showed up on The Big Bow Wow in 2004. He's also lent his talents to The Clinic, Once Upon a Time in Dublin, Hollyoaks, Guardians of the Galaxy, Constantine, Atlantis and The Fall, among many other projects. And, while he certainly looks the part of Lobo in full makeup, we can only hope that he has the right, gruff voice to complete the package.
