The podcast sensation is making its way to television by way of a limited series starring 9-1-1's Connie Britton and Eric Bana, along with a few other recognizable faces. The trailer opens with the frantic 911 calls that served as the basis for the podcast of the same name. The stunning true crime tale is brought to life with Connie Britton as Debra Newell, a divorcee who is swept off her feet by the mysterious John Meehan, who introduces himself as a doctor.
The rapidly-developing romance alarms Debra's daughters, Terra and Veronica. The sisters' suspicions surrounding John and their mother's enduring faith in him set off a schism within the family. As the trailer hints, there will be consequences. The glossily-filmed trailer is teeming with tension and appears to have captured the urgency felt listening to the podcast. In the trailer, you get a strong sense of what the cast will be bringing to the table in their respective roles.
In the first look alone, it is apparent that Connie Britton and Eric Bana have captured a sparkling screen chemistry, as Bana hints at John's true nature seeping beneath the surface during certain snippets. Playing Debra's daughters are Vinyl's Juno Temple and Ozark's Julie Garner, with the latter trading in Ruth's southern-style Missouri accent for Terra's California girl lilt. For those familiar with Garner's work on the Netflix crime drama, her casting as Terra will offer her a fresh opportunity to show off her impressive range even more.
One of the most spine-tingling moments of the podcast involves a woman Debra and John find inside the former's house when they arrive home. As visualized in the adaptation, it is equally bizarre. The trailer does not tip its hand in teasing John's past leading up to when he meets Debra, which means prospective viewers have not had everything given away to them. There are so many twists and turns in this story that the trailer could not possibly hint at them all.
