If you were to ask any Rick and Morty fan what are some of the show's most popular episodes, a lot of them would probably mention "Pickle Rick," the third episode of Season 3. It's definitely one of the show's weirder episodes, which is saying a lot given what Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith go through on a regular basis, but there was one particular "Pickle Rick" scene that co-creator Justin Roiland, who voices both characters, had trouble getting through, as you can see below.
It's one thing to watch Justin Roiland crack up in the recording booth, but the fact that the Rick and Morty team made it look like Rick in his pickle form was the one who had trouble saying his lines is even better. Of course, that Rick has turned himself into a vegetable makes the moment even more delightfully absurd.
For those who didn't catch "Pickle Rick" or haven't watched it in a while, this scene takes place at the beginning of the episode, when Rick's family discovers he's the first human to transform into a sentient pickle, and not long before he builds himself a crude exoskeleton slices up sewer rats and hired guns. As you watch the video, you learn that are two reasons Justin Roiland keeps laughing.
The first is because he can't get over how Rick admits to Beth, his daughter, how he's misled Morty before. That's one hell of an understatement, as much of Rick and Morty revolves around Rick either tricking Morty into going on certain adventures or keeping important details from him. The second is how Rick has to ask Morty to turn him over so he can make eye contact. As Justin Roiland puts it, "So fucking great!"
Along with earning critical acclaim, "Pickle Rick" also netted Rick and Morty a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, the first time the show's won such an award. The episode's been available on home media and streaming for a while now, but watching these outtakes is a reminder of just how kooky and hilarious it was.
Rick and Morty Season 3 wrapped up on October 1, 2017, and while there were several months where it was unclear if the show would return to the airwaves, it was announced back in May that the show's creators and Adult Swim negotiated a new deal, resulting in 70 more episodes being ordered. It hasn't been announced yet when the show will return, although writer Ryan Ridley says it probably won't arrive until late 2019.
